Gilma Mejia
Spanish Teacher
Gilma, originally from Colombia, is a passionate and dedicated Montessori educator who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to early childhood education. As a native Spanish speaker, she adds a valuable multicultural perspective to her teaching, which enriches the learning environment for her students. Gilma holds a Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education, with a specialization in the Development of Reflective, Critical, and Creative Thinking. This academic background has equipped her with a deep understanding of the developmental stages of children and the importance of fostering a supportive and stimulating learning environment.
Over the years, Gilma has built an impressive career, teaching in both Colombia and the United States. Her extensive experience spans a range of educational settings, from preschool to middle school. She has served as a lead teacher and also worked in family coaching, roles that have allowed her to hone her skills in guiding and nurturing children of various ages and developmental stages. Now entering her third year at Battery Park Montessori, Gilma continues to be a valuable asset to the school community, contributing her expertise and dedication to the growth and development of her students.
Gilma’s commitment to the Montessori philosophy is evident through her professional training. She has recently completed her Infant/Toddler Montessori credential through the West Side Montessori Teacher Education Program. Her approach to education is centered around the belief that each child is an individual with immense potential, and she strives to cultivate an environment where children feel safe, valued, and motivated to explore their interests and abilities.
Outside of the classroom, Gilma enjoys meditation and photography which allows her to reconnect with herself and appreciate the beauty in life. Above all, spending time with her family is her greatest joy.
