We guide children in becoming independent, caring, reflective problem solvers. Children work with Montessori materials alone, with friends, and with teachers. Each child is challenged to take risks, celebrate their mistakes, and develop a passion for learning. We cultivate their curiosity to know more and their confidence to ask meaningful questions.
The Practical Life area consists of materials that help develop each child’s pincer grip. The pincer grip involves the muscles we use to hold pens, pencils, and paint brushes. Children gain strength and agility in their hands by pouring, using tweezers, squeezing sponges, sewing, sweeping, washing, and twisting a variety of items.
The Sensorial area trains the senses. They feel the weight of an object, observe differences in height, notice the variations of color, feel textures, match sounds, and distinguish tastes and scents.
The Math area includes materials to support learning numbers, the decimal system, the power of 10, memorization of basic math facts, math operations, and fractions. It is a comprehensive math curriculum that is visually inviting, physically engaging, and sequenced for children as young as 3 and as old as 6.
In the Language area, children learn rhyming, sequencing, and matching. Children also use tools, such as sandpaper letters and moveable alphabets, to learn and retain language. The same tools are available in English, Mandarin, and Spanish.
The Science and Cultural area includes tools for learning geography, botany, zoology, and history. There are also materials for exploring art and music. We extend the science curriculum through a year-long study of nature, taking full advantage of our location on the Hudson River and in the heart a beautiful green environment.
