Mandarin is linguistically distinct because it has four tones, and the same basic sound can give you different meanings if pronounced with different tonal patterns. Speaking and understanding Mandarin develops both temporal lobes, which has positive effects on the way non-language content, such as math, is processed. From birth until the age of 6, children are capable of learning multiple languages, including those with complex sound systems, like Mandarin.
