Music Together - with some Mandarin
Music Together is one of New York City’s longest running and most respected infant/toddler programs. Parents citywide have enjoyed their programs for decades. They have extremely high standards for teacher quality, with an emphasis on musical integrity, best practices in early childhood development, and joyful and engaging classes for children and their caregivers.
Green Ivy Schools is thrilled to be the exclusive provider of Music Together programs in Mandarin! This class is taught by one of our top Mandarin educators from our Pine Street School Preschool program. Read Qingyan's bio below.
Introduce your family to Mandarin through music! Our trained Music Together teachers speak fluent Mandarin and will incorporate the language into songs and activities. It is a great way to introduce or support Mandarin study in your babies and children, but please note this is not a Mandarin immersion music class or foreign language class. This class is just like the basic Music Together mixed age music class in English with some Mandarin mixed in. Some of the songs will have verses in Mandarin. This is not a foreign language immersion class, but it is an opportunity for families who would like to expose their children in a moderate way to another language in a fun, relaxed environment! Children must be age 0-5. An adult caregiver must be present and participate.
Meet Qingyan Yu
Qingyan is a music educator originally from Beijing, China. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Music Education from New York University - Steinhardt. Music education is her passion.
Qingyan’s personal teaching philosophy is that music is borderless and can act as the link between different cultures and become a vehicle for learning. Qingyan is proficient in Chinese (Mandarin) and English.
Her major instrument is cello, and she also teaches lessons in piano, ukulele, and recorder. Qingyan is also a Mandarin teacher in Pine Street School’s Twos program, in the Financial District.
Mini Mandarin - full Mandarin immersion
This immersion class will introduce infants and toddlers to Mandarin Chinese through finger play, music and movement, and story time. A playful and engaging curriculum will guide young learners, parents or caregivers to recognize Chinese tones and sound of words naturally and gradually. Each class, taught by a Pine Street School Mandarin educator, will introduce songs, chants and a storybook. Read Sabrina's bio below.
Here is an outline for a typical Mini Mandarin class:
- Free play (building verbal and social skills with stuffed animals or age appropriate toys)
- Circle time (routine: greeting, names, weather)
- Music and movement (song with movement or musical instrument exploration)
- Focused topic (learning new vocabulary through props, finger plays...)
- Storytime (interactive storytelling related to the theme)
- Wrap up (review, goodbye song, bubble time)
